capital of Ariana
Quetta
A kasbah stands here, as at every seat of every tier — one of 43, built from the same 101-word pattern: the minar over the markaz, the karez beneath the koocha, four bab on four roads. What follows is how this land breaks the pattern.
the land it stands on
The plateau holds itself high and dry, ringed by bare ranges that turn violet at six. Juniper forests — trees that were old before the old names were written — stand above the valleys at Ziarat; northward the ground steps up through Zhob's ridges toward the pine country; and underground the karez channels carry snowmelt for miles in the dark, surfacing exactly where the orchards need it.
in its kargah, mandi and bazaar
- · Orchard economy — apples and dried fruit for the whole country
- · Karez-keeping — the underground water guild, oldest profession on the plateau
- · Wool from the high flocks
- · Chromite and marble cut from the ranges above Loralai
in its nigarkhana and darbar
- · Mirror-embroidery — constellations stitched on black cloth
- · Carpet knotting in the winter rooms
- · Dried-fruit markets scented for a whole street
- · The long ballads of the plateau, sung standing
in its bagh, and past the faseel
- Juniper — living stands measured in millennia
- Suleiman markhor on the ridge lines
- Apples, almonds and grapes in the high orchards
- Chiltan wild goats above the tree line
the book at work here
A karez runs in the dark, so its book runs in the light: every household's water turn, every hour, on the channel's public page. The guild's pride is that the book and the water have never disagreed.
Real, from our world: the juniper forests around Ziarat are among the largest and oldest on Earth — single trees have stood for thousands of years.

the region’s other kasbahs
Every kasbah is the same pattern and no two are the same town — which is the whole point of a pattern.
