Paktyike

capital Peshawar · Herodotus's own word — heritage, not ownership

The gate of caravans — hospitality written as law.

paired Paktyike is one half of the frontier highlands. The other is Ariana. Neither speaks for this kind of country alone — that is the doubling rule, and it is the reason there are ten regions and not nine.

the land, walked

The pass at Landi Kotal has watched caravans for as long as there have been caravans. Poplar-lined roads drop from the hills to Peshawar's storytellers' bazaar, and south of it the Gomal plains open toward the river. This is a region that treats a guest as a legal category.

life — flora & fauna

  • Chukar partridge calling from the scree
  • Falcons kept, flown, and counted
  • Mulberry and poplar along every watercourse
  • Quail in the winter stubble

works — the day’s economy

  • · Caravan trade — the pass moves goods the way the river moves water
  • · Copperwork — beaten, tinned and engraved
  • · Chappal-making — the region's sandal, cut for distance
  • · Dried fruit and green tea, weighed out in the covered markets

craft & evenings

  • · Qissa-khwani — the storytellers' bazaar, where tea is the ticket
  • · Rabab music after the evening meal
  • · Kahwa houses that settle arguments better than courts
  • · Marksmanship fairs in the cold months

a ledger, working

Every load that crosses the pass carries a stamped manifest — where it was made, whose hands it passed through, what was paid at each hand. The caravan's honour was always its record; here the record is simply public.

Real, from our world: Peshawar's Qissa Khwani, the storytellers' bazaar, has traded tales with its tea for centuries.

An abstraction, never a survey — schematic on purpose, because detail this map leaves out is detail you were never going to decide with. It draws no borders: only regions, rivers and work.

its four kasbahs

Capitals are extracted territory — the subregion seat is never the capital. Where an ancient town exists, the seat prefers it over the modern metro. A kasbah stands at each.

  • Where it came from

Goods show where they were made. The place confirms it, and the proof travels with the goods.

A real receipt from this kind of land says hills and passes, a river area, a town or a spot. It never says Paktyike.
