Kasperia

capital Neelum · Ptolemy's Kaspeiria

Pine terraces and river gorges where every dialect is a neighbour.

paired Kasperia is one half of the ice country. The other is Bolor. Neither speaks for this kind of country alone — that is the doubling rule, and it is the reason there are ten regions and not nine.

the land, walked

Deodar and blue pine stand shoulder to shoulder down the Neelum gorge; maize terraces glow on the slopes; and to the south the land flattens into the ravine-cut plateau of Potohar. It is a region of middle heights and running water — every valley keeps a slightly different weather, and all of them drain the same way.

life — flora & fauna

  • Western tragopan — one of the rarest pheasants on Earth, guarded by the villages it lives above
  • Himalayan black bear in the oak belts
  • Trout streams cold enough to ring
  • Deodar — the timber cathedral tree, felled only against a planting deed
  • Walnut groves that pay for weddings

works — the day’s economy

  • · Forestry under the planted-three rule — no felling without regrowth on the book
  • · Honey lines along the flowering slopes
  • · Trout farms in the side streams
  • · Hill hospitality — rest houses on the old walking routes
  • · Walnut wood, seasoned and sold to the carvers

craft & evenings

  • · Carved walnut — doors, screens and dowry chests
  • · Felted wool rugs beaten and rolled by hand
  • · Valley singers who keep the long ballads
  • · Honey markets where every jar names its hillside

a ledger, working

Every felled deodar in Kasperia carries a receipt: three saplings, dated, on the forest book. A buyer of timber can walk the regrowth rows before paying — the forest argues its own case.

Real, from our world: the western tragopan, among the rarest pheasants alive, survives in community-protected forests of the Neelum valley.

An abstraction, never a survey — schematic on purpose, because detail this map leaves out is detail you were never going to decide with. It draws no borders: only regions, rivers and work.

its four kasbahs

Capitals are extracted territory — the subregion seat is never the capital. Where an ancient town exists, the seat prefers it over the modern metro. A kasbah stands at each.

A real receipt from this kind of land says glaciers and gorges, a river area, a town or a spot. It never says Kasperia.
