Bolor
capital Skardu · medieval name for Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral
The roof of the country — glaciers, orchards, and the river's birth.
paired Bolor is one half of the ice country. The other is Kasperia. Neither speaks for this kind of country alone — that is the doubling rule, and it is the reason there are ten regions and not nine.
the land, walked
Everything here is vertical: terraced apricot orchards stacked above gorges, rope bridges over green-white water, and beyond them the ice fields where the river is born. Chogori and its sister peaks close the northern sky. The valleys of Hunza, Skardu and Chitral each keep their own weather, their own weather, and their own gate onto the one river.
life — flora & fauna
- Markhor — the spiral-horned cliff king, back from the brink under valley watch
- Snow leopard — counted, named, and left alone
- Golden eagles riding the pass winds
- Sea buckthorn — sour gold along every stream bank
- Apricot, walnut and mulberry orchards on hand-built terraces
works — the day’s economy
- · Glacier watch — the ice is measured like a treasury, because it is one
- · Micro-hydels — village turbines in the side streams, lighting the valleys
- · Gem benches — garnet, aquamarine and ruby cut where they are found
- · Dried apricots and mulberries, traded down-river all winter
- · High-pass guiding for travellers who come to walk the roof
craft & evenings
- · Shu — hand-milled wool cloth, woven for the cold and worn for life
- · Polo on the high grounds — the mountain game, played fast and unpadded
- · Harvest festivals when the apricots come down
- · Stone kitchens and carved beams in the old forts
a ledger, working
At the head of every valley sits a water book: which glacier fed which channel, which channel fed which orchard. When the melt is early, nobody argues from memory — the book is public, and the orchards adjust by what it shows.
Real, from our world: community-run micro-hydropower plants — hundreds of them, built and owned by mountain villages — light much of Pakistan's high north.

its four kasbahs
Capitals are extracted territory — the subregion seat is never the capital. Where an ancient town exists, the seat prefers it over the modern metro. A kasbah stands at each.
