Gedrosia

capital Gwadar · Alexander's Makran

The dry coast that reads the wind — dates, dhows, and mud volcanoes.

paired Gedrosia is one half of the dry south. The other is Qiqan. Neither speaks for this kind of country alone — that is the doubling rule, and it is the reason there are ten regions and not nine.

the land, walked

The coast road rides between wind-carved cliffs and a sea the colour of hammered tin. Gwadar's hammerhead peninsula shelters two bays at once; inland the Rakhshan opens into the date oases of Panjgur, where the water runs underground and the palms give it away; and near the Hingol, the mud volcanoes bubble their slow grey astonishment as they have for centuries.

life — flora & fauna

  • Date palms — the oasis canopy from Turbat's valleys to the Panjgur groves
  • Houbara and desert fox in the scrublands
  • Dolphins working the bays alongside the fleet
  • Wild olives in the hill folds

works — the day’s economy

  • · The date harvest, dried on rooftop mats visible from the ridge
  • · Dhow-building — hulls raised by eye and by book
  • · Fisheries — the fleet reads the wind, the market reads the deeds
  • · Wind-masts on the passes, spinning the evening grid

craft & evenings

  • · Coast needlework — geometry in silk that takes a season per panel
  • · Palm-frond weaving — baskets, mats, whole rooms
  • · Launch festivals when a new dhow takes the water
  • · Coastal ballads that name every reef and rescue

a ledger, working

A dhow is launched with its biography nailed to the mast: every timber's source, every hand that worked it, every hour and wage, sealed in the deed ledger. Buyers say you are not buying a boat; you are adopting its record.

Real, from our world: Chandragup, the living mud volcano near the Hingol river, has been a pilgrims' waypoint on the Makran coast for centuries.

An abstraction, never a survey — schematic on purpose, because detail this map leaves out is detail you were never going to decide with. It draws no borders: only regions, rivers and work.

its four kasbahs

Capitals are extracted territory — the subregion seat is never the capital. Where an ancient town exists, the seat prefers it over the modern metro. A kasbah stands at each.

A real receipt from this kind of land says dry land and coast, a river area, a town or a spot. It never says Gedrosia.
